Live Course: Uncertainty Analysis in Groundwater Modelling

Join us to explore the guiding principles and workflow process required to design uncertainty analysis when developing a groundwater model.

Working through a real project case study, you will unpack key questions around how a groundwater model addresses the project objective. It will also explain how to design an uncertainty analysis within the project’s time and budget constraints, which will build your understanding of the effect of uncertainty on the project objectives.

The course consists of 2 x 3-hour, live and interactive sessions over two weeks. These live sessions will provide attendees with a unique opportunity to ask questions directly to the highly-experienced presenters. They will bring theory into practice and help attendees apply principles to real-world scenarios.

There is no single step-by-step methodology for the universal application of an uncertainty analysis, but there is a set of guiding principles and a workflow for conducting an uncertainty analysis.

This is outlined in the Independent Expert Scientific Committee (IESC) on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development Information Guidelines Explanatory Note – Uncertainty analysis–Guidance for groundwater modelling within a risk management framework. This document will help guide the course and discussion.

Risk assessment outcomes should underpin the environmental assessment process and guide technical and modelling work. The course sessions will explore the guiding principles and the workflow process to design uncertainty analysis, giving time for you to ask questions. The course will also provide highly useful information for decision-makers.

Using highly relevant case studies, we will bring the theory into practice and be able to apply it to your own work. While different uncertainty analysis techniques will be briefly discussed, this course will focus on the design of an uncertainty analysis for a groundwater model, rather than the step-by-step implementation of uncertainty analysis techniques in groundwater models.

By pitching questions, using polls and answering your questions live through the chat, this 6-hour course will be highly interactive. You will also have some homework between the two weeks to help consolidate your learnings and prepare for the next session.

Format, this course is designed with:

  • 6+ hours of live sessions and recordings with unlimited access for 30-days after the last live session
  • Units to complete consecutively via the AWS learning platform
  • Pre-and-post-course materials to go through via the AWS learning platform
  • Ability to ask questions to the presenters at anytime in the live sessions and through the learning platform
  • Homework to follow through via a manual, between the 2 sessions of the course
  • You will have unlimited access to all the course materials for 30 days
  • Attendees earn CPD hours/points (ie with Engineers Australia) for at least 9+ hours for the entire course

The sessions are recorded & uploaded to the learning platform, if you cannot attend live.

Preparation: There are two readings required before the live sessions (provided through the learning platform), with some optional readings video watching encouraged. There is also an opportunity to tailor the sessions to your direct questions, via the initial survey. The learning platform will also include a folder of approximately 20 reading materials to view after the session.
