About

GoldSim is transforming how engineers, scientists, and planners model complex systems, offering a powerful, visual way to simulate uncertainty and change over time. This highly practical course introduces participants to probabilistic, dynamic simulation using GoldSim and its expanding role in water resources, environmental management, and risk-based decision making. Through hands-on examples, participants will see how GoldSim captures real-world variability and system behaviour that simpler tools often miss.

All participants receive a 30-day GoldSim licence, so you can build and run your own models alongside the course and continue practising afterwards.

By the end of the course, participants who are new to GoldSim as well as experienced users looking to solidify their foundations will be able to confidently build probabilistic, dynamic models and apply them in their own work, deepening their understanding of how simulation supports better decisions.

Course Overview

A practical introduction to probabilistic, dynamic simulation using GoldSim. Across three focused sessions, you’ll learn the key features needed to start building your own models, from the basics of the interface through to running simulations under uncertainty. Designed for those new to GoldSim, with plenty of value for existing users looking to solidify their foundations.
This three-part course is designed for participants to learn the GoldSim environment from the ground up. You’ll navigate the interface and core elements, model uncertainty with probability distributions and Monte Carlo simulation, and build dynamic models using stocks, flows, and feedback over time. The emphasis throughout is on practical model-building, with each session moving from concept to working model.

Course Outline

Session 1 — Getting Started: The GoldSim Environment Get comfortable with the GoldSim interface and core building blocks. This session covers navigating the workspace, working with the main element types, linking elements together, and building a simple working model from scratch. By the end you’ll understand how GoldSim models are structured and how information flows through them.
Session 2 — Simulating Uncertainty: Probabilistic Modelling Move beyond fixed values and start modelling the real world, where inputs are uncertain. This session introduces probability distributions, Monte Carlo simulation, and how to interpret results expressed as ranges and probabilities rather than single numbers. You’ll learn how GoldSim handles risk and variability; one of its defining strengths.
Session 3 — Modelling Change Over Time: Dynamic Simulation Bring your models to life by simulating how systems evolve over time. This session covers dynamic (time-based) modelling using stocks and flows, feedback, and time-dependent inputs. You’ll also look at presenting and exporting results so your models can inform real decisions.
