Course Overview
GoldSim is one of the world’s leading platforms for probabilistic and dynamic simulation, enabling engineers, scientists and decision-makers to model uncertainty, evaluate risk, and better understand how complex systems behave over time. Used extensively across water resources, mining, environmental management, infrastructure, energy and defence, GoldSim provides an intuitive visual environment for building powerful simulation models without extensive programming.
This practical three-session course introduces participants to GoldSim from the ground up. Beginning with the fundamentals of the software interface, participants will progressively develop the skills required to build, run and interpret probabilistic and dynamic simulation models. Along the way, you’ll explore probability distributions, Monte Carlo simulation, stocks and flows, feedback processes and time-dependent system behaviour through practical, hands-on examples.
Designed primarily for new GoldSim users, the course also provides an excellent refresher for existing users wanting to strengthen their understanding of the software’s core modelling concepts and workflows. All participants receive a 30-day GoldSim licence, allowing them to build and run models throughout the course and continue practising afterwards.

Session 1: Getting Started with the GoldSim Environment

- Introduction to the GoldSim interface and modelling philosophy.
- Navigating the workspace and project structure.
- Understanding Containers, Elements and Connections.
- Working with key modelling elements and data inputs.
- Creating your first GoldSim model.

Session 2: Simulating Uncertainty with Probabilistic Modelling

- Why uncertainty matters in engineering models.
- Introduction to probability distributions.
- Selecting appropriate distributions for different applications.
- Running Monte Carlo simulations.

Session 3: Modelling Dynamic Systems Over Time

- Introduction to dynamic (time-based) simulation.
- Building models using stocks and flows.
- Modelling feedback mechanisms and system interactions.
- Working with time-varying inputs and changing conditions.
- Running dynamic simulations.
- Presenting and exporting simulation outputs.
- Bringing together probabilistic and dynamic modelling concepts.
- Practical examples demonstrating real-world applications.
Format
- 6+ hours of live online training delivered across three interactive sessions.
- Session recordings available with 30 days’ access after the final session.
- Pre-course and post-course learning materials available through the Australian Water School learning platform.
- Practical example models and supporting resources provided throughout the course.
- Opportunity to ask questions and interact directly with the presenters during the sessions and via the learning platform.
- Includes a 30-day GoldSim licence for all participants to use during and after the course.
Pre-requisites
- No previous GoldSim experience is required.
- A general understanding of engineering, science or environmental modelling concepts is beneficial.
- Basic familiarity with spreadsheets or mathematical modelling will be helpful but is not essential.
- The course is suitable for engineers, scientists, researchers, consultants, regulators and decision-makers wishing to learn probabilistic simulation.
Requirements
- Windows operating system (recommended).
- Internet connection suitable for live online training.
- GoldSim software (30-day licence provided to all participants).
- Dual monitors are recommended but not essential.
- Basic computer skills and the ability to install software prior to the course.
Completion Certification
- Attendees earn CPD hours/points (for example, Engineers Australia) for approximately 6 hours of live training.
- On completion of the course attendees will be issued with a Certificate of Completion.
- Course recordings remain available for 30 days after the final session, allowing attendees to revisit the material and reinforce their learning.
