The promises and challenges of using pumped-storage hydroelectricity
Pumped storage turns electrical energy into stored (or potential) energy and back again to electrical energy. The system uses electricity to pump water from a lower reservoir to a higher reservoir at times when there is more energy being produced on the grid network than is needed. Although the technology has been in use for over 100 years, the total power generating capacity of pumped hydro systems has been increasing substantially around the world in recent years.
In this webinar, “the Bob Ross of Engineering”, Quint Crispin, demonstrates a home-built pumped storage system; ILI Group CEO Mark Wilson offers an overview of the Red John project that will provide pumped hydro storage in Loch Ness, and Stantec’s Mark Cordell will provide a review of the recent publications outlined below and what the future holds for pumped storage in Australia and worldwide.
