John Fenton studied civil engineering and hydraulic engineering, then did a PhD in applied mathematics. He worked in London and Melbourne on research and investigation, then for ten years he taught mathematics at the University of New South Wales. For the rest of his career he taught and researched into hydraulic engineering at universities in Australia and New Zealand. After retirement he has spent periods as a guest professor at the University of Karlsruhe and for the last ten years at the Vienna University of Technology.
