Professor Cockfield is the Capability & Commercialisation Program Lead at One Basin CRC, Executive Director, the Institute for Resilient Regions and Director of, the Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Systems at the University of Southern Queensland. He has extensive experience in managing both academic and research teams and currently runs a research institute of three centres and more than 70 researchers.

He has had 3 projects externally funded, with project leadership of a major project ($920k) on adaptation for agriculture in the cropping regions of southern Queensland and northern NSW, 2013-16, as part of the National Planning for Climate Change in NRM Program.

Prof. Cockfield has conducted research on climate change adaptation, including on the financial viability and consequences of carbon projects in grazing enterprises, financing wild dog exclusion fences and business decision-making amongst dairy farmers.
