Workshop Focuses on the Murray River Future

The future of the Murray River system is in the balance – and is now at the top of Australia’s water resources management agenda.
In light of that, ICE WaRM’s Living Laboratories programme staged a workshop in Adelaide in October to examine the prospects for the future of the Murray-Darling.

The latest ICE WaRM Living Laboratory seminar at the National Wine Centre in Adelaide set the spotlight on Technological Innovation in Wetland Management.
The workshop explored new approaches which can halt the decline in wetlands, floodplains and other river systems – many of them suffering serious and rapid degradation because of reduced water flows and longer periods between inundation.
Living Labs Programme Sparks Research Initiatives

Several highly successful Living Laboratories events have been held since the beginning of the year. The philosophy behind the Living Laboratories programme, supported by ICE WaRM and the Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation (DWLBC), is that the current investment in landscape change through Natural Resource Management Programmes offers the research community a ‘laboratory’ within agency implementation programmes where hypotheses can be tested and measurements can be taken at the full landscape scale.
