While gender inequality continues to be a major issue in India, ICE WaRM is extremely pleased that five of the water professionals in the group are women.

Dutch Students Make Flying Visit to Australia

A group of 13 senior water resources officials from Thailand has completed a groundbreaking 10-day intensive learning tour of Australia, visiting Canberra, the Goulburn Valley in northern Victoria and Adelaide.
The ICE WaRM-organised tour in early November – the first phase of a water resources exchange programme between Australia and Thailand – concentrated on flood and drought management schemes in the Murray-Darling basin and related programmes, as part of the ongoing collaboration with Thailand.

The final two-day Australian Water Industry Essentials course for 2010 has been staged in Brisbane.
The course, which attracted 16 people from a wide range of water-related industries, was led by Paul Harvey, who has wide experience with the Department of Water in South Australia, and Rod Lehmann, a water engineer from Queensland with experience in the planning and management of water and sewerage supply systems.

Visiting US academic Dr Suzanne Pierce believes environmental decision-making is shifting away from government agencies towards a combination of science and community values.
In a special presentation as part of ICE WaRM’s Visits and Exchanges Programme, the professor from the University of Texas said traditionally water resources were controlled by governing agencies, which developed plans based on analytical information provided by scientists and engineers. But now, she sees economic, social and political considerations emerging as the driving forces for groundwater resource management.

The innovative SWaRM Graduate Mobility Project, which offers study exchanges between Australia and the European Union, is creating fresh educational and personal opportunities for up to 90 students and researchers.

During April, Dr Anne Jensen from the University of Adelaide and Jeff Camkin, Adjunct Professor at the University of Western Australia, led the Australian Water Industry Essentials course in Perth – while Susan Worley from the Department of Water and Dr Pierre Horwitz of Edith Cowans University focused on specific water issues facing Western Australia. ICE WaRM has unveiled details of its 2010 short course training programmes – including Australian Water Industry Essentials, Hydraulics and Hydrology for Non-Engineers, Policy and Governance and River and Floodplain Modelling.The Australian Water Industry Essentials one- and two-day courses developed in conjunction with the Australian Water Association are scheduled to start in Adelaide on 25 and 26 February, before moving to Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney and Brisbane during the year. The final course for 2010 is in Perth on 2 and 3 December.
Yellow River Delegation Completes Study Tour

In 2009, ICE WaRM conducted a very successful Professional Development Programme for 19 mid-career professionals from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC) over a period of about 8 months. This programme was funded through the AusAID Australian Leadership Awards Fellowships programme. As part of that programme, ICE WaRM conducted an evaluation study programme for senior YRCC managers. Part A took place in September 2009. This also presented an opportunity for participants to attend the International River Symposium in Brisbane. Part B of this activity comprised a 10-day study programme for mid-career managers from the YRCC and took place in January 2010.

The Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC) has given strong support for ICE WaRM’s latest Professional Development Programme which brought 19 of the Commission’s emerging leaders to study in Australia for eight months.
Following the return of the 15 men and four women to China in August, an initial evaluation was carried out by five senior YRCC executives – who gave the programme resounding approval.

WA Water Corp Debut for ICE WaRM Course

Venice Lagoon Contamination Falling Says Professor

The water quality in and around Venice is becoming cleaner, but there are still plenty of opportunities for improvement, according to Professor Bruno Pavoni from the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Venice.
Professor Pavoni delivered his analysis of water quality in the Venice Lagoon in Adelaide in mid-August, as part of ICE WaRM’s Visits and Exchanges Programme, and outlined the research he’s carried out since 1987.
SA Governor Welcomes Mekong River Commission Group

The 21 members of the Mekong group, including four senior Cninese officials, involved in ICE WaRM’s Professional Development Programme, have been welcomed at Government House in Adelaide by South Australian Governor, His Excellency Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce AC CSC RANR.
The group arrived in Adelaide in mid-July and received the Vice Regal morning tea welcome at the end of their first week in the city, before continuing their studies with visits to Darwin and the Gold Coast and spending more time studying groundwater management.

The 19 emerging leaders from the Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC) who have been studying in Adelaide since February are on the final stretch of their water resources management programme.
Now at the end of their university-based studies, having completed exams, the group is currently undertaking two-week industry placements ahead of a 10-day study tour of South Australia, the Snowy Mountains Hydro Scheme, the Murray-Darling Basin Authority, Sydney Water and the National Water Commission.

In February ICE WaRM Chief Executive Richard Hopkins was an invited contributor to the UNESCO Regional Water Education Workshop, held in Jakarta, Indonesia.
The regional event was hosted by UNESCO and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) with invited representatives from South Asia, South-East and East Asia and Australia. Ten selected case studies from across the region were presented to stimulate discussion of common challenges in water education and training.

Yellow River Commission Students Start Studies

The latest group of 19 future leaders from China’s Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC) have started their Graduate Certificate studies in water management after completing their initial round of English language tuition.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) team in New Delhi engaged ICE WaRM to host a delegation of very senior Indian Government officials for a technical study tour of water resources policies and management in Australia late in 2008.

The third group of delegates from China’s Yellow River Conservancy Commission (YRCC) has started to arrive in Australia to study under ICE WaRM’s internationally-acclaimed water resources management programme.
The men and women will spend eight months based in Adelaide studying for ICE WaRM’s Graduate Certificate in Water Resources Management and improving their English language skills. The students also will take part in study tours, industry placements and water management forums.

Australian Water Industry Essentials Short Course

In response to popular demand, ICE WaRM and the Australian Water Association have made provisional plans to stage the Australian Water Industry Essentials short course in Adelaide early in 2009.
The two-day course, held across three states in 2008, provides an overview of the current technical, economic, environmental, legislative and social issues associated with the Australian water industry.
First ICE WaRM Scholarship Students Graduate

The first five overseas students to be awarded ICE WaRM international scholarships have completed their year-long courses.

The students – two from China and one each from Sri Lanka, the Solomon Islands and Peru – have been studying ICE WaRM’s Master of Water Resources Management programme at the University of South Australia, Flinders University and the University of Adelaide.
Hydraulics and Hydrology Short Course

ICE WaRM held a short course in Hydraulics and Hydrology 15-16th October in Adelaide. The course was very well attended, culminating in a thought-provoking round of questions and networking.
The course – run by Terry Lucke, a research engineer with the University of South Australia Urban Water Resource Centre – introduces the basic principles of hydraulics and hydrology, covering the occurrence and distribution of water (hydrology) and the movement of water through pipes and open channel systems (hydraulics).
ICE WaRM Supports Visit by Leading Water Expert

Dr Ir Khin Ni Ni Thein, Vice President of Development and Resources at the Asian Institute of Technology, recently presented seminars in Adelaide and Melbourne as part of ICEWaRM’s Visits and Exchanges programme.
Dr Thein’s addresses focused on democratisation in Burma through peace and reconciliation and how water can involve people in the politics of their country. Dr NiNi’s message was to stand above politics and try to resist the temptation of not to politicise and not being politicised.
International Delegations Study Tour

Two high-ranking Asian delegations recently visited Australia for six weeks each as part of ICE WaRM’s international study tours programme.
In total, there were 45 staff members from the Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Can Tho University, the Vietnam Water Resources University, the Mekong River Commission Secretariat, with representatives from the National Mekong River Committees from Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Laos plus representatives from the Thai and Laotian National Mekong River Committees.

In December last year, ICE WaRM hosted the Changjiang Water Resources Commission (CWRC) from China; an organisation which is responsible for the development, utilisation and protection of water resources in the Changjiang River Basin. The CWRC aims to develop and promote integrated water resources management in the Basin while implementing environmental protection measures.

ICE WaRM was proud to host leading researchers Dr Paul Hanson from the Centre of Limnology, University of Wisconsin-Madison and Dr Kane Aldridge from the University of Adelaide as speakers at a seminar on “The State of the Lower Murray Lakes” on the 21st January.
Dr Hanson visited Adelaide to collect data on the condition of the Coorong with the research cluster which focuses on the Coorong, the Lower Lakes and the Murray Mouth (CLLAMM ecology).
Renewing Water Resources Management in South Africa

Dr Mark Dent from the University of KwaZulu in Natal highlighted South Africa ’s acclaimed water and natural resources management policies during a six city lecture tour in February and early March sponsored by ICE WaRM.
He also exposed many of the current problems in implementing those policies in his presentation titled “Renewing Water Resources Management in South Africa – Changing Role, Form and Context For Science”.
