Webinar: State and fate of the Hindu Kush Himalaya water resources
Climate change impacts on the Hindu Kush Himalaya cryosphere
About
In 2007, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released a Synthesis Report which presented a gloomy picture of the future of glaciers in the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH), along with possible impacts on water availability, highlighting knowledge gaps and the need to strengthen research on the HKH cryosphere. Today, we have a much better understanding of how glaciers may change in the future and what it means for water resources. Interestingly, some of the findings are counter intuitive and are in contrast to what was earlier hypothesized. This webinar addresses the projected shrinking of glaciers in the region by one-third by the end of the century and the subsequent challenges faced by the 2 billion people who rely on the 10 river basins that make up the region.
