About

This webinar will introduce the core principles of floodplain risk management – that is, reducing the risks of flooding to life and property. Presenters Adam Berry (Synergy Solution) and Catherine Walker (WMS Engineering) will introduce three key methods by which flood risk can be managed:

Modifying flood behaviour through structural works (such as levees, basins, pipe upgrades and channel modifications);
Improving how communities prepare for, respond to and recover from flooding and a brief introduction to the Total Flood Warning System concept;
Sensible decision making for land use planning and development controls that reflect the flood risk in the region (without unnecessarily prohibiting or obstructing suitable development).

This webinar recognises that flood-prone land is a valuable resource, and explores the ways in which communities can safely live, work and enjoy these areas by better understanding the risks and planning well for the next flood event.

Upcoming courses:

Handed Over, Far From Over: The Client’s Journey with Your Flood Model

Ever wondered how flood models go from technical maps to real decisions on the ground? This three-part course lead by Catherine Walker (WMS Engineering) brings those connections to life through hands-on case studies, expert co-presenters, and a dive into the big-picture impacts in risk management, urban planning, and emergency response.  This is your chance to turn data into action with clear, purpose-built outputs that stand up long after project handover.

Total Flood Warning Systems for Resilient Disaster Management

Explore how Total Flood Warning Systems (TFWS) transform hydrological data into timely, actionable flood intelligence. Led by Adam Berry (Synergy Solutions), this two-part course guides participants through the full flood event lifecycle from data collection and forecasting to emergency communication and response coordination. Blending technical depth with practical strategies, it’s designed for both technical and non-technical professionals involved in flood planning, disaster management, and community resilience.
