Hydrological Forecasting Tools for Water Management

Forecasts of weather and climate, streamflow, reservoir inflow, water demands and water management impacts for the coming days and months are potentially valuable for a range of water management and planning applications. Forecast products are becoming increasingly available from a wide range of providers but there can be challenges in making use of these for operational applications.

This presentation will discuss the concepts of ensemble hydroclimate forecasting including the characteristics of good ensemble forecasts and the key sources of forecast skill. The presenters will introduce modular software tools developed by CSIRO to implement these concepts that have been deployed operationally by water managers.

Through case studies, the presenters will demonstrate how forecasting tools are applied to inform decision-making, then explore future research directions in hydroclimate forecasting science and applications.
