Flood reports contain a wealth of insight, but for many participants without an engineering background, the technical language can feel overwhelming. This course is designed to bridge that gap by showing participants what flood models are, how they are built, and how to interpret the results with confidence.

In this two-part course, participants will unpack the fundamentals of flood engineering before shifting to the real‑world question: "How do you use this information to make better decisions?" The course explores how risks can be reduced or managed, how different approaches work together, and what to consider when residual risk remains.

Designed for planners, environmental officers, and other non‑engineers, this course translates complex flood information into clear, usable knowledge. Participants will leave better prepared to read, question, and apply flood data in everyday work, improving decision‑making across projects, policies, and community outcomes.

Course Overview

Flood information can be difficult to interpret if engineering is not your background. This course introduces the essentials of flood modelling, explains what the results mean, and shows participants how to apply that information in everyday work to make flood-related decisions with confidence.

 

Learning Outcomes

In this course, you will be able to:

  • Explain common flood terms and acronyms used in flood studies and planning.
  • Describe, at a high level, how flood models are made and what information they produce.
  • Interpret common flood maps, hazard information, and model results.
  • Identify how a proposed development can change flood behaviour and risk.

 

Course Outline

Session 1: Flood Basics Explained Simply

(Thursday, 8 April 2027, 10 – 12 PM Sydney Time)

  • What common flood terms and acronyms mean.
  • What information goes into a flood model.
  • How flood models work at a high level.
  • How to make sense of flood model results.
  • Why modelling scenarios, assumptions and limitations matter.

Session 2: Using Flood Data to Manage Risks

(Thursday, 15 April 2027, 10 – 12 PM Sydney Time)

  • What good floodplain management looks like.
  • What options are available to manage flood risk.
  • Why the best approach is often a combination of measures.
  • What to do when some flood risk still remains.

Format

  • 4+ hours of session recordings with unlimited access for 30-days.
  • Pre-and-post-course materials to go through via the AWS learning platform.
  • Additional resources and working model download/s.
  • Ability to ask questions to the presenters at anytime through the learning platform.

 

Pre-requisites

  • Designed for beginners, no prior knowledge is required.

 

Completion certification

  • Participants earn CPD hours/points (i.e. with Engineers Australia) for at least 4 hours for the entire course. 
  • On completion of the course attendees will be issued with a Certificate of Completion.
