Karl is heavily involved in responding to PFAS contamination in the environment, with particular interests in risk assessment, remediation strategies, fate and transport, and development of guideline values for screening risk. He has previously sat on a number of panels including The National Chemicals Working Group, which authored the PFAS NEMP. Areas of expertise include providing technical advice for reforming chemical policy, regulation, and licensing.

His past experience includes researching the environmental behaviour and impacts of chemical contaminants, always with a strong focus on solving problems for industry or regulators. He has developed various chemical analysis techniques, including a method for estimating metal bioavailability, currently in use by research and commercial laboratories.
